Dallas Handknitter’s Guild

  • Posted on September 2, 2010 at 12:29 pm

This coming Tuesday evening is the first meeting of the year for the Dallas Handknitter’s Guild.  I am the speaker this month and for the next 3 months afterward! We will be doing an ongoing program on lace knitting.  This month is a Lace Refresher.  We are going to start the year with a simple knitted lace scarf pattern that will ease those who are not used to lace into the idea and refresh those brains of us long time lace knitters.  Who knows, you might learn a thing or two in the process!  I will also be discussing yarn choices for our shawl project which will begin in October so you don’t want to miss it.

GuildShawlThis is the shawl we will be making as modeled by my beautiful friend, Gloria in her wedding dress.  She just got married on Tuesday night, so many wishes for a long and happy marriage to Gloria and Stephen!

In other news this week, YES – I will be here and we will be open this Sunday even though it is Labor Day Weekend.  Escape the holiday crazies and spend some time with your yarny friends here!

One spot still remains in our Wonderful Wallaby class that starts on September 18th.  Email me at alissa@knittingfairy.com to reserve this space or call the studio (214)412-2889.

TraditionalStockingsLast bit of news, we are going to have a Traditional Christmas Stocking class in October on the 9th and 16th from 1-3pm.  This class is filling up fast, so call to save your spot today.  The cost is $30 plus pattern and materials.

Happy Knitting!
Alissa

Is this your question?

  • Posted on August 23, 2010 at 11:16 am

I had an email this morning from Sue.  Sue asks

Hello,
While at the Stiches fest this weekend, I purchased a pattern of your entrelac baby blanket. I have a question about the yarn yardage -- is the yarn required a regular worsted weight and I would need about 1700 yards?
Thanks,
Sue C.

Sue did not leave me her email address so this is the best I could come up with for answering her.

Hi Sue,
The yardage requirements for the Entrelac Baby Blanket call for 4 skeins of Solana.  Solana has 320 yds/skein, so you will need 1280 yds total. Solana is a worsted weight yarn that gets 5 sts/inch on a US# 8 needle.

Hope that helps,
Alissa Barton

Horton demolishes a bridge…

  • Posted on August 20, 2010 at 10:56 am

25094-Clipart-Illustration-Of-A-Working-Orange-Man-Wearing-A-Vest-And-Hardhat-Standing-In-A-Hole-While-Digging-With-A-Shovel-In-A-Construction-ZoneI feel kind of like a character from Whoville today.  We are here, we are here, we are HERE!!!

The highway department is going to demolish the railroad bridge over 360 at Division street this weekend.  You can follow this map to get your way around the official detour OR you can come up Collins Street in Arlington all the way to Green Oaks and across OR you can come up Hwy 161 from I-20 to I-30 and then follow the frontage road from I-30 to Carrier Pkwy.

All of this extended tour of Arlington and Grand Prairie will only affect you if you are coming up from the south.  If you are coming from the North or from I-30 then you are above the high hilarity and you are totally good to go!

The plan is for this fun to begin this evening and last through Monday morning.  We will be keeping our normal business hours and all classes will happen as scheduled.  You might want to allow some extra travel time so you can truly appreciate the hard work of our TXdot folks.  Personally, I will sit in my car and be glad of the air conditioning!

September and October Classes

  • Posted on August 9, 2010 at 5:06 pm

holdenis1Wonderful Wallaby – this clever pattern by Carol Anderson of Cottage Creations was my son’s favorite sweater when he was little. I think I made every size up into middle school for him. My adorable nephew needs one, so how about we make one together? This sweater is a pull-over available from child size 2 up to adult 2x. It features a pouch pocket in the front and an optional hood (which I think was Alex’s favorite part!). It is made in stockinette stitch with worsted weight yarn – I’ll be making mine out of Kraemer Perfection for Holden, it’s machine washable which will please my sister and very soft which will please Holden.

Cost: $45 (pattern and materials are not included)

When: Saturday September 18, 25, October 2, 2010  1-3pm

Class size is limited to 6, sign up now! Payment for classes is due upon registration.  Class fees are 100% refundable if you cancel before September 4th.  After September 4th we will refund your class fee if we can fill your spot.

There are no make-up classes.  If you must miss a class there is no discounted rate.  We will, however, be happy to help you finish your project during regular studio hours.

Come by the studio, email (alissa@knittingfairy.com) or call Alissa at 214-412-2889 to register today.

TraditionalStockingsChristmas Stockings

Yup, it’s that time – time to be making those Christmas stockings for one and all.  Our quick to knit, Traditional Christmas Stocking is perfect! Easy to make, knit in the round and totally customizable for those who wish.  If you have never made a sock before and always wanted to try this is a fun way to learn.  If you are an old-hand at socks and just want some help translating your skills into a larger size we can do that too.

Cost: $30 (pattern and materials not included)

Knit with Beads! – openings

  • Posted on August 6, 2010 at 12:57 pm

After further class rearranging, we now have 2 openings in the 1-3pm Knit with Beads class which starts on August 14th and continues on August 21 and 28th.

We will be making a sampler piece first that will teach you 4 different ways to place beads into your knitting and then, in week two we will be starting your beaded shawl. If you are a beginning knitter or just want something simple to make I would suggest you try our Triangulum shawl.
Triangulum

Feeling a bit more brave but wanting something still kind of easy to follow? Try out the Shoulder Bling Shawl.
ShoulderBling

Are you one of those people who likes to jump straight into the deep end of the pool? Counterspell is the shawl for you!
Counterspell

No matter which shawl you pick you will have something lovely to show for your new beading skills.
Call or come by the studio today to reserve your space.

August 5-8

  • Posted on August 5, 2010 at 11:06 am

It’s kind of a quiet day here at the studio so I thought I would take a minute to update you on things that are happening this week.
Today I am putting the finishing touches on a program for the Bluebonnet Knitting Guild on the Tubular Cast On. A very nifty start to your project and well worth learning if you haven’t yet.
Tonight, August 4th we have our Drop-in Knitting Class from 7-9pm. Just $10/person to get help on any project you can think up!

Friday is inventory restocking day, so those boxes and packages that have arrived this week will be cracked open and put out for sale. Be the first to see what’s new.

Saturday is open this week. Too hot to go do much but still looking for SOMETHING to do? Come on down and sit around out table. The air conditioning is going, the tea is cold and the company is always the best here at the Knitting Fairy Yarn Studio!

Sunday is our Stitchin’ at the Studio. We have a fabulous group of stitchers who gather here on Sundays and enjoy each others company. This is the perfect time to bring that totally boring stuff, like sewing things together and watch the time fly while you get something done!

I do have two spaces that have become available in the Knitting with Beads Class from 4-6pm on August 14, 21 and 28th. If you were disappointed when these classes filled so quickly then call the studio now at (214)412-2889 and reserve your spot! Class size is limited.

We had a great time at our first meeting of the Knitting Fairy Book Club yesterday! We read Casting Off by Nicole R. Dickson.  Betty Kay did a great job leading us through a discussion of the book and ganseys, traditional or otherwise. I find myself wanting to knit cables.

August’s selection is The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club.  We are meeting the last Thursday of the month, so August 26th, from 1-2pm. It’s a great opportunity to read a good book, bring your knitting and enjoy the community of knitters that gather here at Knitting Fairy.

Drop-in Knitting Class

  • Posted on July 21, 2010 at 10:34 am

Did you know you can bring any knitting project to our Thursday night drop-in knitting class and get help? I love a challenge, so dig out those UFO’s (unfinished objects) and bring em’ in!  It’s hotter than the hinges of Hell now, but soon enough you will wish you had finished those sweaters that need only to be sewn up. Let’s get it done, maybe we can summon an early winter?
